The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is an endangered species of butterfly that is found in an area that is bounded by the Clarence River in the south and extends into Southern Queensland.
The Birdwing Butterfly is found more commonly at higher altitudes of both the Border Ranges and Nightcap National Parks.
Its only scource of food supply, a shrub called Aristolochia has been cleared from lower altitudes.

The Richmond Birdwing's name is taken from the Latin for bird (ornithos) and wing (pteros). The species name comes from the Richmond River area which is its main habitat.
The male of the species has bright yellow and green wing panels with velvet black outlines. It has a yellow abdomen and a bright red thorax.
The female of the species, though less colourful, is the largest butterfy found in New South Wales.
The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly can be observed flying from spring until autumn (October until April)
